With liquidation sales clearing out the inventory, Sweetbay has moved up the closing date of some stores. Some have closed, and the rest will be shuttered by Wednesday.
Sweetbay announced it was closing 33 "underperforming" stores from its collection of 105 in Florida in a drive to conserve cash and better compete with larger rivals Publix and Walmart.
Liquidation sales began two weeks ago with many stores offering 25 percent off. That grew to 50 percent off at some locations, attracting huge crowds to grocery stores and their adjacent liquor stores. Many shoppers went through checkout lanes with two and three carts, only to go back for more discounted items.
That quickly left store shelves empty enough to close the stores early.
Sweetbay rents its locations, so whether a new grocery or other company moves into the space will be a matter for individual landlords and property owners.
