Letters to the editor, March 23

In a recent letter someone stated that the Pasco County Commission should not postpone consideration of closing the “gun show loophole.” The commission should in fact be commended for not wasting time. This so-called loophole is a myth and doesn't exist.
This national gun debate has certainly brought out the naïve and misinformed willing to forgo personal liberty just to feel safe. Just a few weeks ago someone made the absurd claim that the Second Amendment was like having no speed limit. Another letter blamed gun rights proponents for the death of children. Those are just a sample of the irrational and ridiculous statements being made by hysterical gun control zealots.
Wake up and smell the coffee people. A person willing to take another life will not bother to abide by your gun laws. A ban will only render the lawful defenseless. How successful was the Prohibition of alcohol in the 1920s? Do you think anyone had trouble getting a drink during that ban? How is President Nixon's “War on drugs” working out? A useless “Assault Weapons Ban” was law when the Columbine tragedy occurred. Bill Clinton proposed armed guards in schools shortly after, by the way.
Future is waiting
A woman is dead of a self-inflicted gun shot. If there had been a three-day waiting period she might have overcome the depression and would be alive today.
I urge Pasco county commissions to lead through common sense, not fear, and close the gun show loophole on background checks. The future would like to try again and is watching and waiting for the decision.

Will, no way
egarding Florida House Speaker Will Weatherford and his attempts to completely dismantle the state's already fragile social safety net, I guess we should forget that Weatherford's family benefited from the same programs he now wants to cut. Let's forget that millions of Floridians will be left hungry, homeless and helpless if Weatherford gets his way. Let's preserve the status quo at the expense of the people.
All hail Weatherford.
