NEW PORT RICHEY -

The Gulf High softball team will forfeit seven games and pay a $700 fine after using an academically ineligible player, according to Florida High School Athletic Association officials.

The FHSAA said one of Gulf’s coaches looked at the wrong set of grades while checking academic eligibility of players, claiming the coach looked at the weighted GPA instead of the unweighted GPA.

Gulf is now 8-12 with just four games left before the Class 5A-District 8 tournament at Zephyrhills.

“The incident was a gross oversight, as a result procedures have been addressed and modified to eliminate any further issues,” Buccaneers athletic director Travis DeWalt said.
