Wrestling: Pinellas all-stars edge Pasco
PALM HARBOR — Pasco represented, but Pinellas had too much in the tank.
Palm Harbor University was the scene of the 2014 Pinellas vs. Pasco All-Star Wrestling Dual Meet last Thursday, with the host county grabbing a 36-30 victory.
Many of both counties' top grapplers at each weight class participated, including Class 3A state champions Connor and Jared Prince of PHU, Class 1A bronze medalists Jon Galvin of Wesley Chapel and Jonte Scott of Anclote.
Highlighting the evening were back-to-back bouts, at 160 pounds between PHU's Gunner Hurst and Anclote's Scott and 170 pounds between Fivay's Andrew Scherer and Dunedin's Anthony Dampier, said PHU coach and event coordinator Brad Sakevich.
“Scherer came back from being down 5-1 and Gunner beating a kid that took third in the state, that was a huge win,” he said.
“It was a real good way for [Hurst] to finish out. He wrestled hurt all year with a torn labrum. When I asked him to wrestle in the all-star meet he manned up and said he can go one more time. Then he beat one of the better kids in the state.”
Overall, Pinellas wrestlers won eight of 14 bouts. PHU had five champs for Pinellas and Pasco High won three of Pasco County's six titles.
