TAMPA — Tarpon Springs ran into an offensive attack it simply couldn't keep up with Thursday night in Tampa.

The Spongers (8-8-1) brief postseason run ended with a 7-0 defeat in a Class 3A region quarterfinal match at Robinson High.

The host Knights (14-5) jumped out early with a Sam Ishee goal in the 4th minute and never looked back.

“I think when we put the first goal in the back of the net it calmed us down,” Ishee said. “We really wanted to come out early and get that first goal.”

Tarpon Springs wasn't without its opportunities between Robinson's first and second goals. Crosses were sent through the Knights' penalty area on two occasions, but no Sponger was there to put a foot on either.

Separation came for the hosts when junior Amanda Chromiak scored a pair of goals in less than four minutes. She finished a run down the right side in the 32nd and then buried a hectic series of rebounds in front of Tarpon Springs' net in the 34th.

“After the third goal, they were done,” Chromiak said.

Three Knights – Chromiak, Ishee and Megan Bohan – scored two goals apiece. Bohan assisted on two conversions and Laura Osorio set up three others.

Bohan's may have been the

If Tarpon Springs wasn't finished after Chromiak, Bohan made sure of it right after halftime. The sophomore went right down the middle and scored 27 seconds into the second half. Similar to Chromiak, Bohan went back-to-back and scored again in the 44th to put Robinson up 5-0.

The Knights entered Thursday averaging 4.6 goals per night and coach Billy Helms hopes upcoming opposition take notice.

“It's a great statement to whoever's going to win out of Largo and Southeast,” he said.

That would be Largo, who beat up on Bradenton Southeast 8-0 on Thursday. The Knights will get to host the Packers on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

END OF AN ERA

Thursday night also represented the end of John Freiermuth's coaching extensive coaching career on Tarpon Springs soccer sidelines.

The longtime coach spent stints with both the boys and girls programs since the early 1980s.

That tenure reached its crescendo 10 years ago when Freiermuth's Lady Spongers won the Class 4A state championship over Daytona Beach Seabreeze, 2-2 (PK 4-2).
