T.J Alman hit two run-scoring doubles and Aaron Chesson tossed five innings of shutout ball as Dunedin improved to 5-0 in Class 5A District 12 play.
Wednesday’s mercy-rule-shortened 10-0 win over Bradenton Southeast capped the Falcons’ dominating run through league play. Dunedin outscored its five District 5A-12 opponents 55-6 this season and mercy-ruled four.
After Chesson opened the game by striking out the side, the Dunedin bats wasted little time to provide more than enough run support. The Falcons sent 10 batters to the plate in the first, scoring four times on two hits, four walks and Seminole fielding error.
Along with recording 10 hits Wednesday, Dunedin (12-6, 5-0) burned up the base paths by going a perfect 9-for-9 on steal attempts. Second baseman Alex Hart (1-for-3) swiped three of those bags himself.
Despite the early troubles and non-existent run support, Southeast starter Ethan Lundberg battled his way through five innings. The senior struck out four and four of the seven runs he surrendered were earned.
Dunedin coach Tom Hilbert said Chesson played through an illness Wednesday night and did a good job commanding his pitches while dialing back his fastball. The senior scattered three base hits and struck out seven. Jack Hamrick handled the sixth and final inning and retired the side 1-2-3, including two strikeouts.
Alman picked up an RBI in three out of four plate appearances. Both of his doubles came on drives to left field.
Joining Alman in having a multi-hit night was leadoff hitter Trevor Jensen. The third baseman went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a steal.
Dunedin finishes its regular-season schedule with seven non-district games and enters the April 23-26 District 5A-12 tournament as the top seed. The Falcons play again Friday night at home against Clearwater.
