TARPON SPRINGS — Get your lederhosen, beer steins and appetite for bratwurst ready: it’s time for Oktoberfest in Tarpon Springs.
The Tarpon Springs Merchants Association will put on its inaugural Oktoberfest celebration this Friday and Saturday on Orange Street between Safford Avenue and Alt. 19.
The German-based Warsteiner Brewery is co-sponsoring the event.
“This is the first Oktoberfest event the merchants association’s tried putting on and we’re really looking forward to a great couple days here,” said Dan Jenkin, an association board member and the owner of Tarpon Tavern on Safford Avenue.
The Tarpon Tavern will have a German biergarten tent set up in its parking lot with other food vendors, arts and crafts booths and wine and beer tasting tables set up around the area.
Music will be playing all day, along dancing and games going on throughout.
Friday’s schedule is 5–11 p.m., followed by Saturday’s from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. main event.
Local brewmasters will be in attendance Saturday to offer samplings of their creations and discuss the art of beer making. The public is invited to join contests in beer stein hoisting, bratwurst eating, best beard or best German-themed costume.
Admission is free and Jenkin said the Oktoberfest is also part of an effort by the merchants association to hold periodic events off of Tarpon Avenue. The continued beautification of the Safford Avenue-Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail corridor makes Saturday’s location ideal for such occasions, Jenkin said.
