TARPON SPRINGS — Families looking to cool off this summer will have a new local option beginning Saturday.
The city will host a grand opening for its Tarpon Springs Splash Park at 10 a.m., adjacent to the Live Oak Street municipal parking lot.
Crews were seen putting finishing touches on the roughly 1.5-acre watery playground Monday afternoon. PlayCore Wisconsin, doing business as GameTime, received a bid of up to $465,369.75, which includes a $30,000 contingency, to construct the splash park.
Saturday’s public event will officially add another element to an area of the city dubbed the North Safford Avenue Recreation Corridor. Already open for use is the popular dog park and the fitness park, as well as a continuation to the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail.
A new public restroom facility to serve patrons of the splash park and dog park is part of the overall project.
Once functioning on Saturday, children will be able to select from a number of pieces of equipment at the splash park to enjoy. GameTime and Rain Drop Products, the maker of the equipment, submitted an animated simulation of the finished project to the city last year. Among other items, it depicts manatees and pelicans spouting streams of water, a lighthouse raining it down and small slides to ride.
Benches and shade pavilions ring the play area for parents and supervisors looking to beat the heat while to watching over their children.
