Next week's city-sponsored trade show is a business-oriented gathering doubling as an educational opportunity — with a bit of a twist.
For starters, the 2013 Reverse Trade Show, to take place 3-5 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at the Tarpon Springs Community Center, will give business owners a chance to speak with representatives from many of the city's departments in one central location.
But considering municipal purchases can have layers nonexistent in private-sector dealings, department representatives will be able to walk individuals through the necessary steps to sell products or services to the city.
Whereas at traditional trade shows vendors set up booths and try to sell to potential customers, the city's version is reversed. The sellers are business owners looking to add a city department as a client.
Not all departments will be represented at the event, Theresa Kempa, the city's purchasing coordinator, said. The main participants will be the city's largest buyers, such as the recreation, public works and police departments and the water treatment plant.
Business people from Tarpon Springs and around North Pinellas and West Pasco attended last year.
