Tarpon police following leads in doctor’s death

Published:

— Detectives on Friday continued their investigation into the death of Steven P. Schwartz, the 74-year-old physician who was found slain in his home Wednesday.

“We’re following up some leads,” said Sgt. Ed Miller, a spokesman for the Tarpon Springs Police Department.

Schwartz’s wife, Rebecca, returned to the couple’s $1.6 million waterfront home at 1310 Belcher Drive and found the place in disarray, Tarpon Springs police said. She suspected a burglary and, rather than venture farther inside, she backed out of the home and called 911.

A K-9 team and police then went inside and found Schwartz, who died from trauma to his upper body. Investigators do not believe the slaying is a random event.

Schwartz’s specialty was kidney-related disorders. He founded Main Street Medical at 1121 Overcash Drive in Dunedin, where he was still working.
