Police: Clearwater mom leaves baby in hot car while shopping

Published:

A Clearwater woman faces a charge of child neglect after police say she left a 19-month-old girl in a locked car on Monday afternoon.

According to Pinellas Park police, a witness — a certified paramedic – called 911 around 4:30 p.m. after seeing the baby crying and in need of care while in the car in the parking lot at the Target store, 7150 U.S. 19 N.

Vita Abramenkova, 35, was inside the store for about 40 minutes while the baby was inside the car with the doors locked and the air conditioning on low, police say.

Abramenkova told police the baby was asleep when she arrived at the store and did not want to wake her up.

The ground temperature was 92 degrees when police arrived, with a heat index of 101, police say.

The baby was released to her father, police say, and Abramenkova was transported to the Pinellas County Jail.
