The St. Petersburg Police Department announced Thursday that it will begin conducting mounted patrols on the Pinellas Trail.

A media alert states that Officers Ron Try and Julie Bryant and their police horses will begin the first of a series of planned mounted patrols along the Pinellas Trail tonight at 6 p.m.

The new patrol will start at the Childs Park YMCA at 691 43rd St. South. It’s an effort to combat crimes committed against trail users throughout St. Pete. The horses “provide an excellent platform for the officers to view long segments of the trail, give them the ability to respond to any potential problems quickly and still be able to interact with walkers, joggers and bicyclists,” according to the media alert.
