Palm Harbor man shot, falls to death at Tampa International

TAMPA — Officials identified a registered sex offender who was shot by a Tampa International Airport police officer Monday afternoon before jumping from an airport parking garage and dying.

Allen Piano, 47, of 3172 Cypress Green Drive, Palm Harbor, was arrested in St. Lucie County this year on a charge of providing obscene material to a minor, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The victim was an underage female, according to FDLE.

Records show adjudication was withheld Aug. 27 and Piano was ordered to “community monitoring” under the supervision of the state Department of Corrections.

At 4:30 p.m., about a half-hour before the shooting, the airport officer located Piano on the eight floor of the short-term parking garage, and Piano said he was watching planes, officials said.

The officer ran a background check and discovered Piano’s sex-offender status, and Piano’s probation officer told airport police Piano was about to be arrested. An airport spokeswoman did not know why an arrest imminent.

At 5 p.m., the officer found Piano again on the fourth floor of the adjacent long-term parking garage. He was sitting in his car with a gun in his mouth, airport spokeswoman Janet Zink said.

The officer ordered Piano to put his gun down. Instead, the man exited his car and lunged at the officer, Zink said, and the officer fired his weapon.

A wounded Piano then jumped from the fourth floor of the long-term garage, Zink said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Zink said.

The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office told airport investigators that the man received bullet wounds.

The probation officer also told investigators that a shotgun had been reported missing from the home Piano shared with his parents, Zink said.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the result of the investigation, Zink said. The officer’s name hasn’t been released.
