A St. Petersburg maintenance worker sustained life-threatening injuries today after being crushed by the door of a garbage truck, officials said.

St. Petersburg police said paramedics responded to an industrial accident just before 8 a.m. at the city's sanitation compound at 2501 20th Ave. N.

Police said Xuan Van Ho, 70, was cleaning one of the trucks when the driver, who was still sitting in the cab, closed the rear hydraulic door without realizing Ho worker was still near the door.

The door closed on Ho's upper body, resulting in severe trauma, police said. He was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon at Bayfront Medical Center.

An investigation is ongoing.
