DUI manslaughter arrest in Clearwater motorcyclist’s death

Published:

A Clearwater woman faces a DUI manslaughter charge after her car was involved in the crash Sunday night that left a motorcyclist dead, police said.

At 9:37 p.m., a southbound 2001 Buick Century driven by Casandra Renita Hafford turned east from Missouri Avenue onto Belleair Road into the path of a northbound 2007 Kawasaki Avenue, police said. The motorcycle and car collided.

The motorcyclist, Michael B. Ballard, 24, of Clearwater, was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, where he died.

Hafford, 47, of 1944 Douglas Ave., exhibited signs of impairment at the scene and admitted she had been drinking alcohol before the crash, police said.

She was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence with manslaughter and taken to the Pinellas County Jail, where she remained Monday morning.

Ballard, of 1401 Laura St., was wearing a helmet, police said.

The intersection was closed for about three hours as traffic homicide crews conducted their investigation, police said.
