Clearwater police arrest skateboarding Target TV thief

Published:

Clearwater police arrested the suspect who made off with a stolen TV on a skateboard, one day after he was released on an unrelated grand theft charge.

David Ahmaal Aziz Kennedy, 30, was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on one count of armed robbery. He is being held on $50,000 bond.

Police say Kennedy was seen on surveillance video stealing a 32-inch flat-screen TV on Jan. 15 while zipping through the Super Target at Clearwater Mall, 2747 Gulf-to-Bay Blvd.

According to police, Kennedy entered the store about a minute before closing at 11 p.m. and first was looking at cell phone cases.

Kennedy then walked to the TV section, where he took a 32-inch Element LCD TV and was seen on video carrying it while he skated through parts of the store, police say.

When store personnel confronted Kennedy near the store’s exit, police say he brandished a utility knife and then ran out the door, TV and skateboard in his hand, police say.

Once he was outside, Kennedy jumped on the skateboard and headed toward Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard. Police say he last was seen zipping eastbound on the major thoroughfare.

Police say a friend of Kennedy’s told him that he should check out the video, but he told detectives that he was not in the video, nor did he rob the store.

Kennedy has been arrested more than a dozen times in Pinellas County the last few years, jail records show, including an arrest on a grand theft charge on Jan. 9.

Kennedy was released on Jan. 14, the day before the Target robbery, jail records show.
