River Ridge Middle actors excel

River Ridge Middle School entered 101 students in 45 acts and received 27 Superiors, the highest rating, and 14 Excellents at the district thespian competition at Blake High School in Tampa last weekend. Chris Cavazza and Cameron Ward won Best in Show (Critic’s Choice) for their duet acting scene from “The Odd Couple,” and Sarah Corley was named Best in Show in Marketing for “Seussical.” Also, River Ridge Middle students received three Alt. Best in Shows for Monologue, Ensemble Acting and Pantomime.

Diploma designations for seniors added

Families should have received an automated message from Superintendent of Schools Kurt Browning discussing the new diploma designations. This is a result of state legislation addressing different graduation requirements that impact all Pasco high schools.

The major change is the designation of a Scholar or Merit diploma, based on the coursework taken over the four-year high school career. To assist parents in understanding this information, a video podcast can be accessed at the Insync link on the Pasco County School District website. Schools are working with seniors to make sure they are aware of the designations.

The designation may require sitting for a previous end-of-course exam as well as a change in math or science classes.

Students may earn the Scholar designation by meeting specific criteria. Any student interested must take and pass both the biology and U.S. history end-of-course exam, along with meeting other criteria. The algebra and geometry EOC requirement is dependent upon the year the student began ninth grade.

There is an explanation of the new diploma designations and the criteria at www.pasco.k12.fl.us/cis/graduation_requirements.
