Rig spills fuel at Parkway-S.R. 54 exit

Published:

A tractor-trailer exiting the Suncoast Parkway collided with a guard rail at the State Road 54 exit Monday morning, puncturing the fuel tank and spilling more than 100 gallons of diesel onto the road, troopers said.

Noel Gonzalez, 44, of Tampa, was driving the rig north about 9:40 a.m. on the toll highway in Pasco County and missed the exit ramp, a Florida Highway Patrol report said.

Gonzalez then veered right and unsuccessfully attempted to exit, but the 1999 International semitrailer hit a guardrail and crash attenuator before stopping, the report said.

The impact severed the tractor-trailer’s left saddle tank, dumping the fiel onto the road and shoulder, troopers said.

The ramp was closed until the fuel could be removed, the highway patrol said.

Gonzalez was not injured but was cited for improper exiting on a limited-access roadway.
