NEW PORT RICHEY — Some Anclote Elementary School students will get off to a faster start when classes resume Aug. 18 with backpacks stuffed with school supplies, local real estate leaders hope.
West Pasco Board of Realtors volunteers delivered 42 backpacks Thursday to the school at 3610 Madison St.
Principal Barbara Kleinsorge and Assistant Principal Amy Haskedakes expressed their appreciation for the gifts.
Jim Blandford, the Realtors’ civic affairs committee chairman, led the delegation of volunteers who delivered the goods.
“We provided the school with 42 backpacks that are pretty completely packed with everything a kid will need to do what they need to do in school,” Blandford remarked. He is a Realtor with Anclote Key Realty.
“Hopefully we have pretty much the complete package,” Blandford said as he unzipped a backpack to show Pens, notebooks, rulers, crayons and more.
“This is a poor neighborhood,” Blandford said. “So a lot of these kids don’t have any of the things they need. What we wanted to do, as best as we could do it, is to provide as many of them with what they needed to get started in school here.”
Generosity of Realtors and affiliates made the project possible, Blandford emphasized.
On July 26, Realtors staged an event to collect backpacks and school supplies for the benefit, Diana Cammaratta, education director for the West Pasco Realtors, said.
Members have been dropping off contributions as well at the Realtors’ headquarters at 5409 Sunset Road.
Volunteers plan to return the first day of school to help children sharpen reading skills, Blandford said.
