A pilot avoided injury this morning when his plane crashed and went into a retention pond at Pilot County Airport, off State Road 52 near Gowers Corner in northern Pasco County.
Pasco Fire Rescue officials say the plane, a private 1958 Cessna 172, was never in the air and was taxiing when it hit a retention pond at the end of the runway around 9:30 a.m.
The pilot, Stephen Barton, was evaluated by paramedics at the scene.
The plane leaked about two gallons of fuel into the pond, located at the front of the airport.
