LAND O’ LAKES — Pasco firefighters ratified a new union contract that guarantees them a 3-percent pay raise this year.

The International Association of Firefighters Local 4420 voted 88-5 in favor of ratification, according to chapter Vice President Joe Russo. “It was overwhelming,” he said.

The 2014 budget county commissioners approved in September called for 3-percent raises for all county employees except firefighters, who were slated to receive 1.5-percent raises. But Fire Chief Scott Cassin was able to find the additional $250,000 needed to bring the firefighters in line with the other employees without raising his budget.

He said if county commissioners sign off on the agreement, the raises would be retroactive to Oct. 6.
