Local ham radio operators take to the airwaves

HUDSON - A hurricane or other disaster could knock many cell phones and other consumer communications off the air. Gulf Coast Amateur Radio Club members are ready to go on the air to fill the void.From noon Saturday to early Sunday afternoon, club members practiced relaying messages among family members.The radio operators coordinated with Pasco County Office of Emergency Management for the overnight drill.The group set up its emergency communications trailer and the portable tower at EZ Mini Storage, 15830 U.S. 19, Hudson.The trailer ran on a generator or by battery power with no access to electric power.Participating members from West Pasco included Barry Keaveny, Steve Coe, Roy Mitchell, Guy Siciliano, Dale Gosney and many more.The group soon will tally all those contacted by radio during the 24-hour event, as the club was competing with other amateur radio operators during the daylong period.
