NEW PORT RICHEY — Look, up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane. No, it’s the Fit Phantom.

The new mascot for the New Port Richey Recreation and Aquatic Center made his first appearance anywhere with great fanfare Tuesday night.

Children and parents packed the City Hall auditorium to get a glimpse of the superhero mascot during the start of the city council meeting.

The Fit Phantom tossed yellow and black sunglasses to audience members. The sunglasses say Fit Phantom on one side and the recreation center logo on the other side.

The youth advisory board for the parks and recreation department held a contest to name the mascot, according to Parks and Recreation Director Elaine Smith.

Fit Phantom will make many public appearances to encourage children to be “community superheroes” by volunteering.

He also will promote health and fitness at the municipal recreation and swimming complex on Van Buren Street.
