Deputies: Hudson man admits to stealing uncle’s checkbook

Published:

— A 38-year-old Hudson man admitted to giving his uncle’s check book to another man in exchange for drugs, Pasco County Sheriff’s Office reports said.

Scott Sobjack, of 9730 Clyde St., was being held in the Hillsborough County on a charge of violating probation when he admitted to giving his uncle’s check book to Shawn Ronald Berthiaume, of 14238 Mayer Ave., Hudson, arrest reports said. Sobjack was serving probation on drug charges; his uncle lives in an assisted living facility outside the county, records show.

Berthiaume was arrested Wednesday and charged with scheme to defraud after surveillance footage from Bank of Amercia branches in Pasco showed him using the victim’s checks to obtain nearly $8,000, the sheriff’s office said. The incidents occurred in December.

A woman who has power of attorney over the uncle’s affairs noticed money missing from the account and contacted authorities, the report said. The victim did not authorize the 10 withdrawals.

Berthiaume was being held in the Land O’ Lakes Jail on Thursday with bail set at $5,000.
