Letters to the editor, Sept. 12

The right's right

Regarding Patricia Houghtalen's Sept. 5 letter to the editor, in which she criticized op-ed page columnist Rich Lowry's "inane defense of the radical right," Lowry doesn't need to defend anything. He knows what the vast majority of Americans hold as values that are right for this country. Patricia will soon see our country returning to that path.

Contrary to the left's patented statements, the GOP has no war against women. There is good health care out there and we all can find the program that works best for us. Our health care is not now, nor has it ever been, the government's job to provide.

Social Security has proven to be unsustainable and will fail all by itself. Medicare will go broke in the coming decade. President Obama took care of that.

Now it's your turn

All students deserve the chance to earn a quality higher education. That is why we applaud the Florida Legislature, which recently allocated an additional $1 million in funding to Take Stock in Children due to its solid history of awarding scholarships to more than 18,000 deserving low-income students, more than 80 percent of whom are the first in their family to have the opportunity to attend college.

To achieve our goal, we need individuals and businesses to follow the lead of the Florida Legislature and rally behind our organization. Volunteering, mentoring or providing resources to purchase scholarships are great ways to help us in "Keeping the Promise." With Take Stock in Children's unique public and private model of funding, any contribution made is matched dollar for dollar by the state. Sick of 'Slick'

I can't believe that President Barack Obama would permit former President Bill "Slick Willy" Clinton to talk for him at the Democratic National Convention.

Everyone knows he is a pathological liar, a draft-dodger and a pervert. He loathes the military and should have been impeached for treason.

I still get sick just hearing his name.
