Selfish desires

I have figured out why the majority of gun owners, who are intelligent people, argue that the ease of gun ownership in this country, with its accompanying results of murder and mass killings, is an acceptable situation: selfishness.

They do not want to give up that which they enjoy. I understand that. But is their enjoyment a fair price for the killings we have recently had to watch and all of the pain the victim's families will have to endure for years to come?

Their arguments that more guns make us safer is absurd, and we all know it. England has the control laws that we should and its murder rate is 40 times smaller than ours.

I have no problem with controlled small gun ownership, but the ease of acquisition and proliferation of other, more harmful weapons is a sick testament to our country's gun-owner mindset.

While gun owners are unwilling to connect the dots, their selfish desires are what killed those children.

Historic success

This year's Farm Share Holiday Food Giveaway provided food for 750 families, the largest number ever. Hams, fresh produce, canned goods, beverages and supermarket gift cards all helped make the Christmas season a little brighter.

The success of this year's food giveaway would not have been possible if not for the hard work and dedication of dozens of people representing many local and statewide organizations.

I would like to thank my co-hosts, Rep. Richard Corcoran and Sen. John Legg, for their help. I would also like to recognize: Pasco Supervisor of Elections Brian Corley; County Commissioner Henry Wilson; Sheriff Chris Nocco, his command staff and the Sheriff's Explorers. Additionally, Dayspring Academy, Publix Southgate, AT&T, Lowe's, the Knights of Columbus, Volunteer Way, Redeemer Community Church, Chasco Middle School, Suncoast Epilepsy Foundation, PACE Center for Girls, the Pasco Mobile Medical Unit, Consulate Health Care, Sunshine Christian Homes, the Florida Assisted Living Association, Management Associates, Huss Drilling of Pasco, NAMI of Pasco, Land O'Lakes Transport & Moving and Career Central.
