Pedestrian hit by car, dies in St. Pete

A pedestrian "staggered" into the path of a car and was fatally struck Sunday night, St. Petersburg police said.

The incident occurred at 10:18 p.m. on the 100 block of 34th Street South.

The name of the pedestrian was not released, pending notification of family.

A 1999 Toyota four-door sedan traveling south about 35 mph in the center lane of 34th Street approaching First Avenue South, police said. The traffic signal at the intersection had just changed to green for north- and southbound traffic, police said.

The pedestrian "staggered" westbound from the center median, south of the marked crosswalk, into the path of the Toyota, police Officer Michael Jockers wrote in a news release.

The pedestrian was struck and was thrown to the pavement, the news release said.

The pedestrian was taken to Bayfront Medical Center and pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m., police said.
