A 59-year-old man was seriously injured when a car pulled out in front of his motorcycle on Gulf to Bay Boulevard, Clearwater police said.

The crash, which happened at 11:15 a.m., initially closed the westbound lanes of Gulf to Bay, but two of the three lanes have reopened, said Elizabeth Watts, Clearwater's public safety spokeswoman said.

Robert Lee Hatfield, of Tampa, was taken to a hospital with what were initially believed to be life-threatening injuries. His condition has since been upgraded to serious, Watts said.

Hatfield was on his motorcycle, traveling west in the middle lane of Gulf to Bay behind another motorcycle.

A 2010 Accura TSX, driven by Tiffany Linn Goolsby, 29, of Riverview, was attempting to exit the RaceTrac gas station at 2854 Gulf to Bay Blvd., Watts said.

Goolsby waited for the first motorcycle to go by before pulling into the middle lane and into the path of Hatfield, Watts said.

Hatfield was wearing a helmet.
