A homeless man died after he was beaten Saturday night by two attackers in a wooded area in Hudson, according to the Pasco Sheriff’s Office.

Leonard Gregory, 45, died Monday at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point.

About 7 p.m. Saturday, Colby Lee Davis, Richard Smorschok and Davis’ girlfriend were drinking in a wooded area of U.S. 19 in Hudson.

Gregory began drinking with the trio, who are also homeless, when allegations of him sleeping with Davis’ girlfriend sparked a fight in which punches were thrown, according to an arrest report. When Gregory told the men he was going to leave he was jumped, the report said.

Davis, 36, and Smorschok, 38, began to stomp on Gregory’s head, deputies said. The pair did not stop until Gregory stopped moving, the report said.

During the beating, one witness told deputies, he pleaded for the men to allow him to drag Gregory’s body to the roadside to get help.

Davis and Smorschok would not allow the witness to move Gregory and then questioned if the witness, whose identity was not released, would call authorities, deputies said.

The witness returned to the area after everyone left and found Gregory unconscious and gurgling blood, the report said. The witness then called Gregory’s sister, who reported the incident to the sheriff’s office.

Gregory, who suffered severe brain trauma, was taken to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point in critical condition where surgery was performed to repair bleeding in brain bleed.

The suspects were arrested about 8:30 p.m. Saturday night and charged with attempted second-degree murder. Those charges will likely change following Gregory’s death, according to the sheriff’s office. Both remain in the Land O’ Lakes Jail with a $100,000 bond.
