PALM HARBOR – Another opportunity to get above .500 slipped away from Palm Harbor University.

Visiting Seminole received an efficient first start of the season from senior Kyle Frickman and the Warhawks picked up a solid 6-1 win Thursday afternoon.

“This is probably the most complete game that we've played,” said Seminole coach Jeffrey Pincus. “We've played some very competitive games against some very competitive teams. The key was throwing strikes, letting them put the ball in play and then making plays.”

Frickman largely got the job done by keeping the ball down and pitching to contact. In his five shutout innings of work, the senior struck out one but rolled 11 ground-ball outs.

“I usually think of myself as a ground-ball pitcher,” Frickman said. “I'm not really a strikeout guy. I don't throw too hard but I keep the ball down and let the defense work.”

Seminole (5-7) spotted Frickman with a run in each of the first two innings before getting some separation with a two-run fourth to go up 4-0.

All nine starters in the Warhawks lineup recorded at least one of Seminole's 12 total hits. Right fielder Jacob Silverstein, shortstop Chris Berry and designated hitter Austin Lamoreux led the way with two apiece.

Baserunning played a role in Seminole's all-around complete performance. The Warhawks went 5 of 7 on stolen-base attempts, including a well-executed steal of home in the seventh after trail runner Cody Miller got himself in a rundown between first and second that allowed Silverstein to score before getting tagged for the third out.

PHU (5-6) put runners on base in five of seven innings but couldn't manage to get key hits. The Hurricanes went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven total on base.

Five of PHU's seven hits came from the 6-9 spots in its lineup, but production at the top was lacking. The 'Canes top three hitters went a combined 0-for-11. Cleanup hitter Shane Mullen turned in a 2-for-3 day with a pair of singles and scored PHU's lone run in the sixth.

Freshman reliever Billy Mock worked the final two innings for Seminole, surrendering a pair of hits and the sixth-inning unearned run.

PHU is done playing for the week and will prepare for two big upcoming Class 8A District 8 road games. The 'Canes travel to St. Petersburg on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Sarasota Riverview on Friday at 7 p.m. The games bookend PHU's home date against Clearwater on Wednesday afternoon at 4.

Seminole gets back to District 7A-9 play tomorrow night at home against Clearwater at 7.
