Art contest for youth

Pinellas County K-12 student artists have the opportunity to have their works exhibited at the 38th annual Mainsail Art Festival April 20-21 in downtown St. Petersburg.

The Young at Art Student Competition has been a part of Mainsail for 11 years and is a juried exhibition open to all public and private school students in the county.

The deadline to submit entries is Friday, and that can be done by going to www.mainsailart.org/young-at-art/.

According to a news release, an independent judge will select the final artwork based on artistic merit, originality, skill, technique, personal artistic vision and style. Three Awards of Excellence and three honorable mention awards will be selected. There also will be monetary awards given for the first time of $50 and $25 gift certificates.

County board seat open

The Pinellas County Board of Adjustment has one alternate member position open.

The board reviews variance requests for issues such as setback reductions, lot area reductions and parking requirement reductions, as well as requests for special exceptions.

Members are appointed by the Pinellas County Commission and are required to be registered voters of Pinellas County. Interested residents must send a resumé to the county commission no later than the close of business on Friday. The commission will then make its selection at its March 19, meeting.

For more information on the Board of Adjustment, go to www.pinellascounty.org/plan/boa.htm or call the Zoning Division of the Strategic Planning and Initiatives Department at (727) 464-5047.

Email resumés to cmeinck@pinellascounty.org or mail them to: Cyndi Meinck, Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners, Pinellas County Courthouse, 5th Floor, 315 Court St., Clearwater, FL 33756.

EL Library workshop

The 2013 East Lake Community Library travel workshop will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Friday.

At the top of each hour, Miki Durand Schnakel and her associates from Florida Cruise Planners/American Express Travel will detail the hottest river cruises, train tours and resorts throughout the United States.

After guests hear about each location there will be a question-and-answer period.

There also will be a drawing. The grand prize will be a two-night stay at the Clearwater Beach Hilton Resort, priced at more than $500. Donated proceeds from the drawing and refreshments benefit the Friends of the East Lake Community Library's fundraising efforts.

The library is at 4125 East Lake Road. Questions can be directed to Patricia Perez at (727) 773-2665.

Storm prep advised

Pinellas County Emergency Management is advising residents to begin preparing now for the 2013 hurricane season.

Although the Atlantic hurricane season does not officially begin until June 1, emergency managers note that preparations made now can also help in the event of late-winter and early spring tornadoes and storms.

Early preparations the county recommends include: registering for special needs evacuation assistance by calling the Pinellas County Emergency Management at (727) 464-3800, the Pinellas County Health Department at (727) 824-6900 or a local fire department to start the process; checking your home's envelope by looking for things such as shutters for windows and if the roof is in good repair; and tending to nearby trees that may have dead or broken branches.

A full list of preparations and helpful safety tips can be found by going to www.pinellascounty.org/emergency.
